Description

ASHA SELF-STUDY COURSE Intermediate Level, 0.1 ASHA CEUsLearn how to achieve cooperation and sound and word production in children who refuse participation in speech-language therapy.

“So practical! And the information can be put to use immediately!”
— Amy R., SLP

Seminar Details

All speech-language pathologists face young clients who refuse to participate in speech-language activities. Some children don’t want to play unless it is play of their own design, and they hardly want to imitate sounds and words at all. In this DVD, Pam Marshalla draws from over three decades of clinical experiences to discuss 18 specific strategies to help clients overcome this type of uncooperative attitude. This material is designed to help therapists think through these issues regarding their own specific stubborn young clients.

This course is available for ASHA CEUs and/or Continuing Education Hours and is also available for group CEUs.

“I loved this video. One of the best I have ever seen. The pace was perfect – the quality of the DVD was beautiful. Everything was broken down nicely and easy to follow! I enjoyed listening to Pam’s explanations and anecdotes from her experience. And I loved the booklet, which was much bigger and easier to read than most conference I have gone to lately with power point handouts that I need a microscope to read (!!). ”
— Amanda, SLP

“I loved the ideas presented in the course! Besides for being varied and creative, they help give therapists “permission” to trust what they intuitively know about relating to children (e.g. from parenting experience) as opposed to the “scientific” behavioral methods that are advocated in many academic texts that do not reflect a natural way of relating to children. Good format. I felt it was easy to follow; I have always found Pam to be a fantastic speaker and I love benefiting from her experience. Thank you!”
— Chelsea, SLP

  1. J. Franklin

The one-hour length was great for a working therapist! Full of extremely practical and useful tips. The instructions, video, and handout worked together seamlessly. Concise and organized, and packed with information! Pam teaches and speaks in such a way that you don’t realize how much you are learning because you are laughing and enjoying the ‘conversation’ so much!

  2. RR Roisin

This lecture is jam-packed with with content and hands-on strategies that can be implemented immediately! Ideal for graduate students or recent grads who have little experience working with children. It’s also appropriate for seasoned SLP’s who struggle in this area.

  3. Cory

This DVD allowed me to realize that “good talking” was an inadequate response. And, I should be more fun and more spontaneous with therapy. Also, gear therapy to the child do not become too rote it may be boring to the child. I loved this hour! It gave great ideas in a short time. It both reinforced what I was doing and gave me new ideas. Such as: that I might be asking children to organize their phonological skills too early; saying we; and remembering to look at the long haul.

  4. Barbara Stutton

This video will be an outstanding resource for filling the minds of new clinicians with creative ideas an refreshing the minds of more seasoned clinicians.

  5. Chelsea

I felt that the ideas presented in the course, besides for being varied and creative, helped give therapists “permission” to trust what they intuitively know about relating to children (e.g. from parenting experience) as opposed to the “scientific” behavioral methods that are advocated in many academic texts that do not reflect a natural way of relating to children. I really liked how Pam was so animated and easy to follow with the booklet. And the booklet was much bigger and easier to read than most conference I have gone to lately with power point handouts that I need a microscope to read (!!). I enjoyed listening to Pam’s explanations and anecdotes from her experience… I loved this video. One of the best I have ever seen. The pace was perfect – the quality of the DVD was beautiful. Everything was broken down nicely and easy to follow!

  7. S. Brookings

The convenience, audibility, and ease in which I could follow along were all great. Pam Marshalla is so fun to listen to, as her knowledge is endless and she presents it in such an understandable manner.

  8. Karen Fielding, M.A., CCC-SLP

I am a seasoned therapist, and although I have many years of experience, this video was an excellent way to allow me to step back and reflect on intervention techniques and things I may have forgotten or not tried in awhile. As you indicated, because everything is so data driven, it can be easy to forget what the BIG Picture is…developing an individual who can communicate in this every-changing world! I’ve always like the way in which Pam talks to fellow SLP’s and relates her own experiences. It makes sense and is easy to follow.

  9. Jack W

Short, to the point. She was up front about what she does not like about current trends (I appreciate honesty and full disclosure).

  10. Amy R., SLP

Love the fact that it is so practical and can be put to use immediately!

  11. Mary-Kate P

I will be sharing the information I received with my colleagues (speech, OT, PT, teachers ) that work with children in Early intervention especially how to use verbal leads, word choices, and curiosity, to elicit words or participation. It is also important to remind therapists, parents and teachers to speak positively about the child’s skills instead of negatively when in front of the child to build on self-esteem as it could contribute to his stubborn behavior. I so enjoyed listening to Pam again. She was such a generous speech pathologist who truly exemplified the “art” of therapy. The DVD just reinforced the things I have learned from her and from my experience. Enjoyable!

  12. Tiffany

I liked the way Pam took the 18 methods and clearly defined and explained each one. We all do some of these methods some of the time but actually putting a name to it helped me to think clearer about applying each method. I love the list of verbal leads. I’m going to copy it and hang it in my office!
