  3. Jill

Great resource. I wanted it for a client that puts all non food items in his mouth because the title says “other oral habits” This book did not help me with that, but it’s great for thumb sucking.

This is a thin little book on how to stop thumb sucking. It gives the therapist or parent easy-to-follow advice as written by a knowledgeable speech pathologist. Give it a try.

I am a speech therapist and this book is invaluable when it comes to helping parents come up with solutions for their child’s thumb sucking. In my field, many children who have speech difficulties as well as thumb sucking behavior take much longer to remediate their speech difficulties. The thumb sucking impedes behaviors necessary for good speech and language development. This book has unique solutions to try with your child. Since every child is different, not one technique works for every child. This book offers multiple solutions and is sure to have several that will be successful with various children.

Pam Marshalla has developed a wonderful guide to getting your child to stop sucking their thumb. My daughter will be 4 in a couple weeks and her plan for older kids was right on. She’s hasn’t been sucking her thumb for the last week and we are well on her way to kicking the habit. After we fill another chart with stars she’ll get her blankie back. What an awesome tool. My daughter really benefited from the honesty that Pam suggests you have when speaking to your child about what will happen to their mouth and teeth, speech, etc. I showed my daughter pictures of mouths from adults who didn’t stop sucking their thumbs and that had the most effect on her. We had to set blankie aside and up, as Pam suggested, but she can kiss and hug her blankie whenever she asks to, then it goes back up in the closed until she’s completed her her success chart. Amazing!

Pam Marshalla’s books and writings are a must read for those helping students with oral motor issues or articulation related oral motor deficits. She’s the best, and this book is a great quick reference!
