All speech-language pathologists face young clients who refuse to participate in speech-language activities. Some children don’t want to play unless it is play of their own design, and they hardly want to imitate sounds and words at all. In this DVD, Pam Marshalla draws from over three decades of clinical experiences to discuss 18 specific strategies to help clients overcome this type of uncooperative attitude. This material is designed to help therapists think through these issues regarding their own specific stubborn young clients.

- Adjust cognitive, phonological, and play level in therapy to make therapy activities more pertinent for clients who are uncooperative.
- Overcome tired routines of verbal stimulation so that clients become more willing to participate.
- Adjust performance ratios, the physical environment, and toys to win cooperation in therapy.
- Set realistic priorities so that clients who are uncooperative experience more success.
Satisfactory Completion

ASHA CE Registry & Fee
To earn ASHA CEUs, subscribers must have paid their annual ASHA CE Registry fee. Individuals must meet at least one of the following conditions to be eligible to earn ASHA CEU:
- ASHA Member (includes Life member and International affiliates)
- ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) Holder
- Licensed by a state or provincial regulatory agency to practice speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology
- Credentialed by a state regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology
- Credentialed by a national regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology
- A Clinical Fellow supervised by someone who holds the ASHA CCC

The one-hour length was great for a working therapist! Full of extremely practical and useful tips. The instructions, video, and handout worked together seamlessly. Concise and organized, and packed with information! This DVD allowed me to realize that “good talking” was an inadequate response. And, I should be more fun and more spontaneous with therapy. Also, gear therapy to the child do not become too rote it may be boring to the child. I loved this hour! It gave great ideas in a short time. It both reinforced what I was doing and gave me new ideas. Such as: that I might be asking children to organize their phonological skills too early; saying we; and remembering to look at the long haul.

I really liked how Pam was so animated and easy to follow with the booklet. I will be sharing the information I received with my colleagues (speech, OT, PT, teachers ) that work with children in Early intervention especially how to use verbal leads, word choices, and curiosity, to elicit words or participation. It is also important to remind therapists, parents and teachers to speak positively about the child’s skills instead of negatively when in front of the child to build on self-esteem as it could contribute to his stubborn behavior. I so enjoyed listening to Pam again. She was such a generous speech pathologist who truly exemplified the “art” of therapy. The DVD just reinforced the things I have learned from her and from my experience. Enjoyable!

We all do some of these methods some of the time but actually putting a name to it helped me to think clearer about applying each method. I love the list of verbal leads.
